Community Initiatives

Music & Motion Dance recognizes the importance of the performing arts in serving the community. As a company we believe that
creating such performance opportunities ...

* gives members of a community a positive sense of identity and cohesion;
* revitalize and improve the economies of cities, towns, suburbs, and rural areas;
* increase educational attainment and cultural literacy; and
* bridge social barriers and address some of society's most pervasive systemic problems.

The goal is to make dance performance more accessible in Philadelphia and to cultivate a dance audience. By using public spaces, people can interact and share ideas and with it develope a greater appreciation of the arts and each other. Through dance we hope to build positive interactions, community and appreciation of youth in the arts.

2006 PROJECTS

Dance For Social Change -
Starting in Spring of 2006, Music & Motion will seek to mobilize the dance community on both a local and national basis to address the issue of hunger. Now more than ever, food banks are in need of support and donations to help those in need. By getting the dance community to host food drives at performances, classes, workshops, and school dances, we hope to be able to assist local food banks in meeting the needs of so many people in our communities.

Youth Cultural Exchange
-
In July of 2006, under a intercultural grant, Music & Motion will perform and tour in Canada for two weeks. Cities to be visited include Toronto, Montreal and Quebec.The most powerful force in the promotion of international understanding and peace is exposure to different cultures. The world becomes a smaller, friendlier place when we learn that all people — regardless of nationality — desire the same basic things. We believe that the performing arts - music, dance, theater are the key to such exchange and are truly the universal lnaguage of humanity and expression.
